He Walks With Me - Avett Brothers .. Jonathon's Last Mortal Night.. 1/5/15
JONATHON SPEAKS ~~~~~
I have a little room. 'My chapel,' I call it. I pray in there and listen to music. You know it. I hear Kol Nidre in there during The Biblical New Year and Mendelsohn's Elijah Oratorio during The Passover. I listen to a lot of things. One of my favorites is actually a Trinitarian hymn called He Walks With Me. A lot of people know it from the movie. A lot of people know it as The Places In The Heart song. They sing it at the end, during the final scene, where all things are made right. I've known about it for generations. Before records, I had sheet music. Shape singers sang it before The War Between The States. I'd visit evening services in different places. I'd listen, all by myself in the back, and think how right for Pentecost it is. Please know I speak of the Unitarian Pentecost. I speak of The Revelation At Sinai.... the time God spoke to the faithful... all the faithful. You see, that nineteen fifty six Ten Commandments movie got it wrong. The Lord spoke to everybody, not just Moses. They all heard. They all saw. And please forgive me for preaching, but this night is important to me. I am mortal for the last time. Tomorrow night I will be changed. I will be translated. I will be 'vampire' again. And I want to remember my
'call.' So I listen to the song and I remember Sinai, the night when God spoke to all assembled there... those in the flesh, those in the spirit, all who believe and all who will believe. You might of been there and just not know. You see, Sinai sneaks up on you. One day it all comes rushing back.. And it wasn't just The Ten Commandments... It was the whole thing.
Edith made me a special dinner. We had hot, tuna melt sandwiches on thick slices of crusty, whole wheat bread. She makes good tuna fish. Chops little pieces of celery and sweet onions in it. I used to watch her make it before, when I was vampire, before this mortal intermission thing. She made it for herself and Billy and maybe for any other mortals we happened to have in the house. She'd make egg salad too and macaroni and cheese with crumbly, bakes bread crumbs on it. I've had it twice before, but this will be my last time.
I ate it with her and Billy in the kitchen. We watched Extra and Access Hollywood on the television. Edith likes those shows. She alternates. One night it's them and the other night we have Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. If her favorite contestant is not winning, she does a 'power' spell and hoo-doo's them to win. I say - You know these are filmed months in advance. What good's a hoo-doo gonna do?... But she says - I send it back in time.... and gives me a 'how stupid can you be?' look. But I do have to admit her people usually win.
(tears up a little) I like it here. I love our 'family.' Night-folk are sentimental. I can't help it. We're all like that... at least the 'noble' ones anyway. And even though I've been mortal these last few months, I'm still like that. I can't help it. But I feel so weak. I walk around the city and see how pathetic so many people are and there's nothing I can do about it. I give them money. I do that. You know that part (sigh). But I want to do more. I want to go back to 'culling.' I want to kill the wicked. And I don't judge. I'm not the one. It's the 'visions.' We have visions. I know I talk about that a lot. Only do you know how hard it is sharing all this with you almost every night and not knowing who's a new reader and who's a long time reader and who's just looking for porn, or 'mommy' blogs, or free coupon blogs..... (sits quietly for the longest time... someone knocks on the door)... WHAT!? .... Nothing. Are you alright? - says Edith... YES, I'm alright. I'm alright..... OK, just checkin' - she says and goes away. Jonathon looks right at the readers and says - I have a heart problem. This body has a heart problem. They just found out. Doctor Fanklin asked if they could examine me before my translation. That's when they knew. Just surfaced. When I'm a vampire, it won't make any difference. Sarah wanted to do it right away. But I said - Please, give me a night or two. Let me think..... They make me take these aspirins all the time.... I just want to think. I
just want to be in here by myself and think
about my family, my 'real' family. I want to think about them while I'm still mortal. Makes me feel closer...... (then he closes his eyes. looks like he's praying too. maybe mouthing something in Old Spanish, or Liturgical Hebrew, or Classical Arabic...
Sarah listens from the other side of the door. She's worried too...
He turns up the music... not loud... not blaring, but just a little.
She goes away...

Billy Kravitz' vampire wonderland: The Book of Sarah
Billy Kravitz' vampire wonderland: The Book of Sarah: I was unable to communicate with you last night. I just needed quiet. I did not go out. That is very rare. My eyes were open. I knew it was ...
This portion of our tale originally aired during the early nights. October or November of 2010, I think it was.
Little Bastid Annie was still with them. Papa was still an imprisoned vampire specimen, held deep in the caverns beneath the streets of Rome. But his soul flew free, infecting Little Annie with an evil itch. And Jonathon, also known as Tomas, was there to see it all.
Do you want to know how vampires speak surrounded by their own? They have a cadence, you know, a certain sound, a rhythm. Bards knew it. Shakespeare did too. Consider the prose of Dickens, if you want to feel the like.
Or click on the phrase up above... the one that says the Book of Sarah. Two souls saw this darkened song when it first rose from the screen.
Read it now... at your leisure, to find out what we mean...
El mundo vampirido is real. We simply pretend that it's fiction...

Night-Folk Observe The Human Condition... 1/1/15
I will cross over to my old 'home.' I will re-assume the burden of vampirism soon... But not this night... not this 'Eve' of The Trinitarian New Year. This night I go forth once more and Sarah goes with me. I enjoy walking the streets on nights like this. Holidays reveal the truth of things. The convenient numbness of ordinary dates is swept away, replaced by heightened sensitivity and emotions. Sometimes this temporary condition tilts toward the good, as it does during Christmas, or Passover time, or even the universality of a 'hot dogs for everybody' town square Independence Day. But more often than not 'they' (people) just become more full of themselves and aware of their own desires.
It's cold and crisp. The stars are bright. The firmament is so precise, I can see scuff marks on the surface of the moon, though I am not privy to who, or what made them. Center City is alive. Twenty somethings flit from club to club. Tittering girls hug their naked arms and shoulders, as they tap-tap along in high heels. A few intelligent examples bring their coats. Fathers would be so pleased. Their gelled up dandies are little better... shirttails out, cuffs rolled back, yelling to all the 'bros' and 'dudes' in loud, artificially lowered voices (what's the opposite of falsetto?). Some carry bottles of beer.
Older revelers huddle in high priced booths, hidden from the masses in palatial dining salons selling status and meat to the rich and almost rich. They laugh at jokes from last night's talk show monologues, drink fifteen dollar cocktails and suck bits of flesh from between their teeth. I could watch them for hours. There's an oblivious complacency about them, like the court at Versailles before the fall. Though this crew would probably mutate rather than disappear.
But tonight we look for other souls.... scared people... threatened people... struggling people. They buy party fare in mean bodegas and convenience stores (convenient for whom?) for familial get togethers in rude walk-ups, or crumbling narrow row houses.... a box of doughnuts... a bag of chips... perhaps an artificial tasting, chemical laden 'dip.'
We drop paper money where they will find it. How wide their eyes grow. How quick their hands move. A 'twenty' here. A 'C' note there. Some grow furtive, lest neighbors see and 'try something.' Others continue smooth as silk. A pound or two of tavern ham beats canned Vienna Sausages any day. We don't judge.
One girl, foreign, East Indian, I think she was, though dressed in 'skinny' jeans and grimy shearling boots, was happy. She approached the counter with two scratch-off lottery tickets. The slacker clerk, deep in a convo with visiting colleagues about the merits of this or that rolling paper tried to avoid her. He looked. They all did, what with her long, dark wavy hair and that little diamond chip in her nose. She tried not to notice. Finally, after thoroughly exhausting the academic ins and outs of rolling papers, he turns to the girl and says - Yeah?... She shows him the scratch-offs and says - May I please redeem these for the money?.... Clerk says - I-I-I can't help you. You gotta do it in the machine (they have a completely incomprehensible, digital gambling machine.) Get a voucher. Bring it back and I'll cash it.... Girl goes - I do not know how to work that type of machine. The other one, the lady often helps me. Could you please help me?.... He looks at the tickets... two of them... each good for one hundred and fifty dollars. I suppose he didn't like that. Why should he help her get three hundred dollars? His friends didn't like it either. I could tell by their faces... dull, flat, expressionless hate.... He says - Nope, can't leave the register. Go read the instructions. You can't read the instructions?
She takes her tickets and goes to the machine. Sarah and I pretend to browse containers of hummus, but we watch and we listen. The slight, small girl reads the screen and scans her tickets. She has her heart set on the money. I can tell. Though five heartbeats later she moans. The machine doesn't care about her either. The screen says - Three hundred dollars has been credited to your balance. Didn't even let her pick her game. Just spat out a whole tray full of ordinary, daily number 'quick picks.'... She blanched and sighed, whispering - No.. no.. no.... Then she found a bit of courage and called for the clerk. She said - Excuse me. It scanned my tickets and gave me all this..... Clerk comes over. NOW he comes over. He goes - You must have picked that.... She pleads - No. I told you I did not understand this machine. I told you that. Can you switch it? Can you cancel it? Please, can you help me?... His friends at the coffee station take it all in too. Clerk goes - Nope. Lottery's a whole different thing. You gotta call them..... The girl doesn't know what to do. I think she came out to buy treats for her family for New Year's Eve and all. Why they'd send her, I don't know. Maybe the others are children, or older people who can't speak English?.... One of the guys by the coffee station yells - Turn it over. There's an eight hundred number on the back... She doesn't understand. Clerk shakes his head. Guy yells again. She takes one of the papers and looks. Clerk says - You got a cell phone?... Anyone could see the store phone right on the counter but he didn't offer it.
If I didn't take vows. If I was a vampire already, I'd kill all three of those guys.... By now the girl's crying. No, weeping would be a better word. She's standing there, staring. She doesn't know what to do.... Clerk says - I don't know what to tell you. Call 'em. You got a phone..... Then he just sits there.
Sarah slips an emerald ring off her finger. She looks at me. I pass her a few hundred dollar bills. She rolls them and puts them in the ring. Then she taps the girl who sniffs and looks up. Sarah holds up 'the gift.' The ring's got to be worth at least nine thousand dollars, not counting the three hundred in cash. Girl doesn't say a word. 'Vampire eyes' can do that. The other three creeps don't look. They think it's funny. They don't want to do anything for her. Sarah nods. The girl takes the ring and the money and stuffs it in her pocket. Sarah whispers - Go... The girl runs out. She did take her Daily Number tickets. Hope she wins plenty. We slipped out too.
Maybe I won't kill that clerk...but I can scare him plenty. Late nights in that place will never be the same again.
Wait til I cross over. Wait til I begin to sublimate. Wait til he starts seeing things.
That's how it goes.... 'Wait.'..... Everything is 'wait.'
Maybe this year will be different?... Happy New Year....
Have a good one...

Jonathon Remembers --- Be Gracious To All For Saints And Redeemers Walk Among You
Jonathon continues ---
I ride around the city. There were two bikes in the cellar. It's really a collection of finished rooms... simple and utilitarian, but (at least these days) certainly not a dungeon. The little ghost boy, the polio victim, likes the bicycles. He asks about them all the time. He stands there and looks at them. You see, by the time he was old enough for a real two wheeler, he was already sick, so... no bike for him. Edith reads him stories. Plays checkers with him. He tells her what to do and she moves his piece. Most ghosts can't manipulate actual matter. Basement Boy ended up in an iron lung, so he's used to that. I really care about him.
Tonight I'm just human... Not a person waiting to be a vampire again... Not a thousand year old whatever I am... Just me. Well, nothing's truly plain and regular in our world. Edith threw a hoo-doo on me... repels 'harm caused by evil and harm caused by dreamers.'... Dreamers means thoughtless. Piney Wimmen know lots a spells. Not all of them. Just the Witchy Wimmen. When I stopped for a light, a weird panhandler came over. More like a shakedown artist. Knocks on car windows. Goes - You got money? I'm hungry. I'm hungry.... Leans on roof of the car panting... Ladies try to ignore him. They look straight ahead and inch through the intersection... I've seen him before. Leaves men alone, because they'll run over his feet. But on a bike we're all fair game... Street's narrow, so he gets real close. Says - Yo, buy me a cheese steak, or Gotta get to 'Lantic City. It's an emergency..... Usually Atlantic City panhandlers say that line the other way around, but this one's got his own M.O.. This one grabs my arm. I feel his desperation right through my 'winter active gear.' Think he wants the bicycle too... I mumble what Edith told me to mumble. I go - Carrion.... That's all... one word and he sees big, fat, glistening maggots fall from my every exposed bodily orifice. I look up and grin. He jumps back real fast and runs away, shaking illusory maggots off his own body too.... Mind picture spells are real easy. You see, I don't want to hurt anyone, because I've been remembering my religion..... or a special part of it.
'And unto each generation thirty six pure and righteous souls shall be born... perfect vessels for the spirit of The Lord. It is for their sake life goes on. Let no man know the identity of these saints, for they, themselves, know not what they are. Simple folk with simple lives, but noble souls and blessed hearts. And one of their number I separate from the rest. That one is Messiah, whom I will call to redeem when it is time to redeem. Yet even that anointed one knows not who he is.'----- I learned that as a youth---' Love thy neighbor, for after the lessons of Egypt, where you were strangers, even the stranger is your neighbor... Be gracious to all, for saints and redeemers walk among you.'
Odd lives vampires lead. Called to do good. Called to cull the wicked. And not in a hard or tortuous way, but clean, quick and peaceful. Yet sensual and yearning just the same. Not angels, but something akin to that breed. Not the Shepherd, but the sheep dog.... I've said that before. You've heard it... Well, no more digressions. No more vain adventures. I will do what I am made to do... a noble vampire and in no way like the noxious members of our race.
Oh, I'll still dress well and walk with a certain grace... So will Sarah... So will Baylah... and that other one, Leo, Conrad, whoever he is.
A cultivated gentleman, I will be. This twenty eight year old body suits me.
Now let me glide through these old, quiet streets before I take my 'vows.'
Perhaps I'll stop for coffee and a chat with friendly strangers.
(all is still, as he pedals down the eighteenth century street and turns away)

What a Vampire Thinks... 12/29/14
I type this myself. Billy is already sleeping. Edith set this up for me. She knows the rudiments of modern technology. For those who may not know - I am Jonathon ben Macabi, also known as Tomas de Macabea. Right now, I'm mortal, but will soon revert to my night-folk state. The circumstances leading to this unusual, but not unheard of, state of affairs is complex. But everything's in the record. All you have to do is google Vampire Wonderland by Billy Kravitz Tomas dies in The Academy of Music .... The March, 28th, 2014 post (second from the top) is best. Click on that if you like. It's all the work of an evil elferino (a rare occurrence). There was a 'born' witch too, though she was just a stooge. So pointless. But I digress.
Soon I shall be 'life-eater' again. How will I bear that burden?.... I think you know... I will bear it as I did for my first nine hundred and thirty odd years. I will bear it nobly, renewing the vows made oh so long ago. Thus if you're not evil, you have nothing to fear from me. Those of you familiar with this site, or tale, or whatever they call it, know this. I and those like me 'Cull the wicked and help the worthy live.'
We dine but once a month. Smaller infusions of liquids, such as broth, or spirits are tolerated and make social situations with unknowing mortals less troublesome
I study this body in the mirror, wiping the steam from the glass. Night-folk enjoy hot showers, especially between feedings. How similar it is to my first body... same height... same build. Perhaps a bit larger. I was eighteen the first time. This meat puppet is twenty eight. Belonged to a model. Gym memberships and all that. I won't complain. Still the same long, dark, wavy mane. That I like. Doctor Franklin did a good job. Hair where there should be hair and smooth where I should be smooth. First eyes were Andalucian brown. These seem more dark grey. Change is good.
Sarah dries me. I love those towels. So thick... So soft... So clean. I stand there like DaVinci's famous Vitruvian Man, allowing her to get all the damp spots. Pity I don't have more of them. Then, she anoints me with lotion (sighs)... delightful.
No, I do not type away in the warm, bathroom mist as this goes on. Some things I repeat from memory. Don't like when she brushes my hair, though. Finger drying works best. Am I fussy? (shrugs) I suppose. Look, I admit to being vain. All vampires are vain, thus my predilection for fine, leather bootkins and hand tailored denims. Good legs on this body. I'm glad of that.
Thought I'd tell you more. But Sarah wants me. Soon I won't be mortal. I suppose she likes the novelty.
So let me leave this miraculous device and go to her. Edith, our witchy-woman housekeeper will close up. She'll put my towel away. Look at her peeking out from the kitchen. She's not watching that Bruce Spingsteen tribute. She's watching me.
Let her enjoy the show...

Jonathon Asks Sarah About her Mortal Days... 12/28/14
It was a warm December, sometimes damp, but rarely icy. Jonathon and Sarah continued sitting out in the little back garden. It was their private space, hidden from view by brick walls. But squirrels can scramble over bricks. They came down to gather the walnuts Edith left out for them. She thought it her duty.. more than that... She had to do it.
Sarah snuggled beneath an old shearling robe. I don't know where it came from. Vampire households have many treasures. Things just turn up. Jonathon lay next to her. The antique, patio chaise lounge held two. He had a knit cap pulled down over his ears. Mortals, even temporary ones, are quite sensitive to nighttime chills. 'Warm December' is a relative term, you know.
He watched a squirrel, surprisingly nocturnal, tuck one of the walnuts under its arm, much as a man might carry a large melon, before disappearing over the wall. Sarah counted stars.
Then he said - What did you keep in that basement?.... What do you mean? - she said...The one under Philadelphia After Dark, the bookshop; I was there last night.
And you went downstairs?
Yes.
Sydney let you down?
Sydney wasn't there - he said.
She exhaled and said - That happens sometimes. You do understand I knew about magic, or whatever you want to call it before I met you?
Uh huh.
So, what happened?
There was a blind man and a deaf woman. I think they were a couple. I think they were husband and wife. Ghosts, I think.
Were you scared?
Yes I was scared. Not terrified. I don't think I was terrified. But I was scared. I knew they couldn't touch me. I knew they couldn't hurt me. It usually goes that way, I mean, but he gave me something.
She looked at him.
He gave me a book, my book, an old book, a copybook from my school days.
Which school days?
My mortal school days. My real school days. My human school days. Old leather... Old parchment. Nine hundred and forty years old it is. I was shocked. Did anything like that ever happen to you?
No.
And you never went down the cellar?
No. There was a key. I had a key. I guess Sydney has it now. The landlord showed me the cellar, for like about a minute. Told me not to store books there. Too much trouble getting cartons up and down the steps. So I kept everything in the little storeroom by the back door. What'd I get, maybe three boxes a week, if I was lucky? It was a big empty space. That's all I remember. The key was for emergencies. Like if the fire department had to go down. I put a big chair in front of the door. I didn't like it.... What, there're bones down there?
Just a hand. An anatomy specimen. Think the tag said 'University of Pennsylvania.'
What did you do with it?
It's still there.
And the book?
It's upstairs. (he thinks and continues) I know what Scottosh Beedosh means.
Did the ghosts tell you?
No... An angel did.
Oh God! no more of this religious stuff. Do you know the trouble it starts?
What do you mean 'do you know?' Of course I know. But this isn't like that. No big movements. No big demonstrations. I think it's just for me... a reminder to be the right kind of vampire... to be the kind of vampire I always was. I want to be night-folk again and I want you to do it.
Sarah's startled.
You have the power. You have my blood. You have Papa's blood too. You're just as strong as me... or as strong as I was. I want this thing. Please.
All right.... Now?
Jonathon begins to cry... She kisses him
And in night-folk lore, already prone to spiritual hyperbole... the daughter shall be mother to the father...
